二因

Two causes, of which there are various definitions:

(1) [lang id =1028]生因 The producing cause (of all good things); and [lang id =1028]了因 the revealing or illuminating cause i.e. knowledge, or wisdom.

(2) [lang id =1028]能生因 The 8th [lang id =1028]識 q. v.: the cause that is able to produce all sense and perceptions, also all good and evil; and [lang id =1028]方便因 the environmental or adaptive cause, which aids the 8th [lang id =1028]識, as water or earth does the seed, etc.

(3) [lang id =1028]習因 or [lang id =1028]同類因 Practice or habit as cause e. g. desire causing desire; and [lang id =1028]報因 or [lang id =1028]果熟因 the rewarding cause, or fruit-ripening cause, e. g. pleasure or pain caused by good or evil deeds.

(4) [lang id =1028]正因 Correct or direct cause i.e. the Buddha-nature of all beings; and [lang id =1028]緣因 the contributory cause, or enlightenment (see [lang id =1028]了因 above) which evolves the [lang id =1028]正因 or Buddha-nature by good works.

(5) [lang id =1028]近因 Immediate or direct cause and [lang id =1028]遠因 distant or indirect cause or causes.

◆﹝出涅槃經﹞ 〔一、 生因〕， 生即發生。 謂本具法性之理， 則能發生一切善法。 如穀麥等種， 能生芽孽， 是名生因。 〔二、 了因〕， 了即照了。 謂以智慧照了法性之理， 如燈照物， 了了可見， 是名了因。 ◆﹝出宗鏡錄﹞ 〔一、 能生因〕， 謂第八識能生起眼等諸識， 又為一切善惡種子之因， 譬如穀麥等種， 為發生芽孽之因， 是名能生因。 （第八識者， 即藏識也。 ） 〔二、 方便因〕， 謂眼等諸識， 能為方便引發第八識善惡之種， 譬如水土以為發生穀麥等芽孽之方便， 是名方便因。 ◆﹝出天台四教儀集註﹞ 〔一、 習因〕， 習即數習之義。 謂如習貪欲， 則貪欲增長， 是名習因。 〔二、 報因〕， 報即果報， 謂行善惡之因， 即得善惡之報， 是名報因。 ◆﹝出大智度論﹞ 論問曰： 諸煩惱是惡法， 云何能生善業？答曰： 有二種因。 〔一、 近因〕， 謂人為求後世富樂， 故修布施等善， 是為近因。 〔二、 遠因〕， 謂人欲離欲界衰惱不淨之身， 故修禪定之善， 是為遠因。 ◆﹝出大涅槃經﹞ 〔一、 正因〕， 正謂中正， 中必雙照， 三諦具足， 故名正因。 （中正者， 離於邊邪也。 雙照者， 照空照假也。 空謂蕩一切相， 即是真諦； 假謂立一切法， 即是俗諦； 非空非假， 即是中諦。 故云三諦具足。 ） 〔二、 緣因〕， 緣即緣助， 謂一切功德善根， 資助了因， 開發正因之性， 故名緣因。 （了因者， 了即照了， 謂以智慧照了正因也。 ） ◆﹝出瑜伽師地論﹞ 〔一、 牽引因〕， 謂由無明之惑， 於先世時造作善惡一切業行， 由此業行為因， 則能招引現生果報， 如是展轉牽連不斷， 故名牽引因。 〔二、 生起因〕， 謂由無明之惑， 於現世時， 造作善惡一切業行， 由此業行為因， 則能感得後世果報， 如是展轉相生不絕， 故名生起因。
